Why Do Excavator and Heavy Machinery Hoses Burst Quickly?

One of the most frequent causes of heavy machinery downtime is the unexpected failure of high-pressure hydraulic hoses. A burst hose on excavators like CAT, Komatsu, or Hitachi not only halts operations but also leads to the loss of expensive hydraulic fluid. What are the primary engineering reasons behind this?

1. Pressure Spikes and Surges

Every hydraulic hose is rated for a specific Maximum Working Pressure. When an excavator digs through rocky terrain, the hydraulic system experiences extreme pressure spikes (hydrodynamic shocks). If the hose's reinforcement layer is not designed for such loads, a rupture is inevitable.

2. Mechanical Abrasion

On heavy equipment, hoses are subject to continuous dynamic movement. Rubbing against metal components or other hoses wears down the outer synthetic rubber cover. Once the steel wire reinforcement is exposed to the elements, oxidation (rust) occurs, compromising the hose's structural integrity.

3. Improper Crimping Tolerances

Errors during the crimping process—even by fractions of a millimeter—can reduce a hose's lifespan by 80%. Over-crimping crushes the inner nitrile tube, while under-crimping causes the fitting to blow off under dynamic pressure.
